There is another side to the Manny story. His former agent, Jeff Moorad, or his firm, have been cheated out of their commission (of the options) by Manny's actions to get the Red Sox to drop the club options for 2009 and 2010. Could it be said that Boston would have picked up the options had Manny honored the terms of his contract and played like he was capable? I think so. If I was in Moorad's position, or the firm's position, I would think hard about filing a lawsuit against Manny and Boras. I am surprised that Bud Selig, did not intervene in this situation with his "best interests of the game" powers. For all of Manny's acts of stupidity, and assault of a 64 year old man, he should have been suspended for the year and fined the remainder of his contract for 2007. The traveling secretary should have filed a lawsuit. Maybe that would have got his attention. His grade school tantrums and subsequent actions have affected many people, all out of self interest and greed. What I would like to see is that Manny not be offered any contract at all for 2009. It won't happen, but that is what he deserves.....to be out of the game. Yes, I am a long time Yankee fan, however, I do not wish to see Bonds either.

As a Manny appologist, management supposedly promised manny his contract would be discussed as he expressed his desire to finish his career in Boston, as that did not happen and was told it would not happen until Nov. he felt slighted. Management kept adding fuel to the fire with story leaks etc. Of course manny didn't help by not running out that ground ball against the no hitter. Also manny takes a few games every year, but he is constantly up there in games played. As far as shoving the traveling secretary, he was out of line no doubt, but it was a shove not an "attack" and we don't know the full story as to what was said other than a demand for tickets. Also he doesn't have any history inside or outside baseball other than slapping Youkilis who is the biggest crybaby on the team. If you have ever played sports with constant whiner and complainer you know what i mean.

Sox lost the most potent hitter in the line up who is a Yankee killer. who hits in the clutch etc, and has the most post season HRs. Bad move for the Sox as ortiz is 1 for 15 since Manny left and could still be hurt.

He should honor his contract and play hard, but I can see his point in wanting a long term committment. They could have agreed to rip up the option years and cut him loose or negotiated a new 4year 80m deal, he would have been happy and Boston would be in position to win another World series this year.

I've previously blogged on this site in praise of Manny Ramirez and his sterling HOF cred. After that bizarre trade fiasco, I have listened to talk shows here in Boston, talked to friends locally, called everyone I know across the country. The verdict is unanimous: Manny being Manny used to be weird and unpredictable but fun in a goofy kind of way. Now, Manny has graduated to mean-spirited, hurtful, self-absorbed unprofessionalism and it is pathological. "Manny being Manny" has morphed into "Manny needs a Nanny." He also needs professional help. And by the way, according to all sources, Boston was held hostage and did the right thing. As Jason Bay blosoms and Nanny Boy continues his slow, inexorable decline, Boston fans will move on. Another World Series is in the offing.

PS: When Nanny Boy stopped playing while pretending to play, he - in effect- threw those games; thus helping his team loose on purpose. Where was the Commish during this Dog & Pony Show? Players have been permanently banned from this league for less. Think about it.

I have to say I wish Joe Torre would go back to the American League. I'm a D'backs fan in Phoenix, Arizona and I have to tell you with the Dodgers/D'backs game on Sun. taking TWO hours to complete four innings, the "rivalry" has lost all appeal for me. I really didn't care who won the game at the end of four innings and frankly went out shopping. Last night the D'backs' GAME lasted just under two hours--eight and one/half innings! That's more like baseball. Pitch fast, throw strikes! I used to go to L.A. to watch my D'backs against the Dodgers--no longer. Move the game foward Torre, or move back to the American League.

I have been a Red Sox fan for as long as I can remember, and I firmly believe that Manny did not get what he deserved in the long run. I have to say I have enjoyed watching him play (when he played) and he has to be the best hitter going....but they say actions speak louder than words, and both his actions and his words in the past month or maybe longer, spoke volumes. I agree with Mark from Modesto that he should be out of the game totally, and maybe THEN he would figure out that there is no "I" in TEAM. Now maybe the Red Sox can get something going!

I agree with Mark Pierce. Depending on which behavior you think is worse (the traveling secretary debacle vs. the deliberate loafing) the commissioner should have either suspended Manny or banned Boras as the instigator of the contract option and trade "strategy". The Commish did neither, so that leaves the free market to determine Manny's future. This is not automatically a bad thing. Without a doubt, these behavior problems dimish his value. Here in 2008, he is a pretty solid 30 HR, 100 RBI guy. But there are others who are younger, cheaper, and have less "baggage". He's worth about as much as Gary Sheffield was at the same age. This is a perfect opportunity for a little collusion. The owners could easily decide that Manny and Boras are more trouble than they're worth. All they have to do is pass on a 37 year-old guy with behavior issues. As an added bonus, they could cite his "injuries" as a cause for concern. This would prove that Boras is a moron for screwing up $40 million worth of club options that Manny could have pressured the team to pick up if he simply played up to his ability. Besides, how can anyone guarantee that Manny won't be up to the same old tricks if he ends up on a team he doesn't like (or Boras finds a new path to payday?) Maybe the solution is to let the free market take its course.

While I am sick of hearing about Manny and Boras, I also think that their actions need to be given more attention.. Manny probably thinks he is clever to get out of his options.. Chances are this will benefit him financially. It certainly is benificial to Boras. However, I think that both their names and reputations have been tarnished much more than they predicted. Now everyone knows that Boras is not an honest person to do business with and will keep this in mind when dealing with him. The players will realize how dishonest Boras is and hopefully will not want him to represent them. As for Manny, no matter how he plays the rest of his career, this is what many people will remember him for. In the end, hopefully they will both get what they deserve.
