Now the Texas bench coach, Howe, the Mets manager from 2002 to 2004, had to be grateful for being safely insulated from the madness that engulfed his successor

Not the first Mets’ mess in firing managers

John A. Seems Wright has all glib answers and is interviewed too many times by scribs, and doesn't hit in the clutch anymore.Delgado smiles all the time while playing first like a statue and hitting like he's 50 years old. Reyes seems to be in space at shortstop, 2nd base is almost like a platoon and Beltran has no fire. The bullpen is a hit and miss from one day to the other. Sounds like a 3rd or 4th place team doesn't it.

Not the first Mets’ mess in firing managers

This should have been handled differently. NO doubt about it. The Mets should have and could have showed a little bit of class here for a revered NY baseball figure. However, EVERYONE is following a herd mentality here and jumping on the band wagon. I would have not done it this way myself but if I was the Wilpons I would be pretty hopping ticked about Willie "playing the race card." This whole thing never had anything to even remotely to do with race. Furthermore, Randolph and others in similar situations who refer to "race" do this great sport and in particular this nation a great dis service. There is no excuse for that. In fact, I would go so far as to say that that single statment was in many ways more "cowardly" than the middle of the night firing.

Not the first Mets’ mess in firing managers

A couple of class acts we have in our nation's largest city, eh? One of them cans the manager in the middle of the night, the other cries like a baby because the National League doesn't use a DH. So what would he have done if Wang had hit a home run ... give the runs back? Daddy George is kind of looking like a gracious gentleman compared to Hank, and that's a pretty good trick. Maybe if he could get an extra $400 million from the taxpayers, it would soothe his fury.

Hard to imagine what the Mets were thinking. Maybe they subscribe to the old Hollywood starlet philosophy ... you know, "even bad publicity is better than no publicity." Except that, being in New York and all, they already have media dudes scrambling for their tape recorders if they so much as scratch their butts. So forget that theory.

What outrageousness is next, I wonder? They could ask Bud to re-align the divisions so that the NL East consisted solely of the Mets and the Seattle Mariners, thereby finally making it possible for the Mets to win their division. Of course, in his statesmanlike way, Bud would call for a committee to study the matter, and sometime in the year 2027, they would make a recommendation.

Or here's a thought ... they could snooker Hank Steinbrenner into believing that if he would relocate the Yankees to Peoria, the NL in return would take up the DH. The Mets would then have the NY tabloids all to themselves, and there'd be 30 more possible job openings for Barry Bonds.

And as an added bonus, the Mets would then get that taxpayer $400 million, and they could sign more over-the-hill free agents.
