Where will Alex Rodriguez land?

Posted: Monday, October 29, 2007 2:59 PM

Every so often something happens to remind us how close pro sports are to becoming the hedonistic, narcissistic world of entertainment.

Which brings us to Alex Rodriguez deciding to opt out of the final three seasons of his contract with the Yankees. We expect nothing less from A-Rod's agent Scott Boras, but I submit that the player should be held accountable.

The decision to upstage the World Series by making the announcement during Game 4 and move the spotlight from the magnificent story of Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester to grotesque talk about hundreds of millions bound for one player whose next World Series game will be his first and who drove in one run in his last 13 postseason games, is a stain on A-Rod’s permanent legacy.

What this decision tells me is two things: 1) A-Rod has no interest in returning to the Yankees, whether it is because of a cool-at-best relationship with Derek Jeter or because he's fed up with the city's tabloids (remember this summer’s front page photo of A-Rod with woman who was not his wife in Toronto). By refusing to meet with the Yankees in person, he likely insured the team would stand by its position of opt out and it means goodbye. Team officials are on record as saying the Yankees would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.

2) Boras has something in the works. No way the agent walks away from a top spender like the Yankees without some indication about a potential deal elsewhere. (See J.D. Drew -- also represented by Boras -- opting out of his deal with Dodgers last winter to sign a very lucrative contract with the Red Sox).

Where will A-Rod land? Here's five possibilities in no particular order:

GIANTS. This is the “marquee” factor. No team understands more about the importance of having a top draw than do the Giants. Why? No other team is paying for its own ballpark. And no team has an easier payroll fit for A-Rod than the Giants with the money saved from the discarded salaries of Barry Bonds, Matt Morris and Armando Benitez -- an amount in the range of $30 million. That puts San Francisco in the conversation and I believe the Giants will be calling upon A-Rod (remember it was the Giants who last winter gave Boras’ client, Barry Zito, an astounding contract).

METS. They were A-Rod’s preference in 2000. No move could better stick it to the Yankees and try to fulfill Boras’ claim (regarded as absurd in television circles) that A-Rod enhances the value of a regional sports network (the Mets are majority owners of SportsNet New York). Question: If A-Rod's added, what to do with David Wright?

ANGELS. Owner Arte Moreno has publicly declared no interest in one player consuming so much of the payroll. But recent playoff failures could change his thinking.

CUBS. They spent $400 million to get back to the playoffs this year, but the reality check is they were an 85-win team in a bad division. A-Rod could be the player who pushes them to the top of a very even league. And the Cubs employing A-Rod's favorite manager, Lou Piniella, doesn’t hurt either.

TIGERS. Lots of Boras clients play on this team and there's a willingness to spend by ownership. They have decided to move Carlos Guillen to first base and on the day after the World Series they filled the hole created by Guillen's move by trading two highly regarded prospects to the Braves for Edgar Renteria. But A-Rod would be quite an upgrade at third base for a team with a veteran core that seeks to win now.

The Indians or the Marlins.  Cleveland can afford him - or he can play at home in Miami where they can also afford him.
to Phil Spence's point about for an athlete with his talent how little respect he gets from colleagues, media and fans.  So true, it's not like he's got a bunch of endorsement deals either correct? He lacks Likability and it's pretty obvious that no matter how talented you are, with that piece missing, you're screwed....i'd love to see all ball clubs shut Borass and Rod-Up-His-Ass...OUT.  That would be pretty amazing.
A Rod is one of the most insincere self-centered individual in sports. The Yankees will thrive without A-Rod's malignant clubhouse  presence and under the new management of Joe Girardi.  The Yankees I hope will have learned the importance of not spending  the majority of their wealthy budget  on offense but instead on focussing on young and effective pitching. Good luck to the next team who will be spending millions of dollars  for that  whining egocentric  baby.
These New York sports reporters need to shut up about a-rod opting out of his contract.  Thy're just mad because they're yankees fans and they know he's the best in the league. You aren't gonna hear Jorge Posada or Andy Petite being called narcissists if they decide not to come back to New York.  Why this one player?  Besides its not like he's leaving much of a team anyway.  When is the last time they won the World series?  When he left all his fans in Seattle and here in Texas you didn't here us going on the air and publicly bashing him.  Why is New York so special?  As for him upstaging the world sereis, most of us people in the world didn't here the news until after it was over.  As for a-rod being greedy and looking for more money everyone knows he' not going to find anywhere that will pay him anything that the Yanks' did so he must be lookin' for something else.  I don't know maybe he wants to be on a winning team and obviously the Yankees aren't getting it done.  One more thing Dereck Jeter is overrated.       Put up or shut up Yanks.
Who cares where A-Rod goes and SHAME on FOX for their coverage of the series.  FOX SUCKS!!  From their bizarre ADD here there and everywhere filming to their yackity yack announcers, missing the first pitch of nearly every inning to the final and biggest crime the retarded break to discuss A-Rod DURING THE GAME.  Did I mention FOX SUCKS!
he just cost the Yankees 21+ million in money the Rangers were paying.  Why would they sign him now?  Not the boys of George.  West Coast baby.  But I dream of him bringing 52/156/320 and gold glove to Detroit and let the pizza man continue to spend.  They went over 3 million.  He could pay his wage by selling tickets to one of the best supporting baseball towns in America.
I would like to see him go to the Giants, where he would never be heard from again.  A-Rod and Zito will eat up half the Giants payroll while he goes for the home run record.  They will be surrounded by rookies and 40 year old position players, and they will be lucky not to finish last every year while he is there.  Good luck.
WHO CARES HE"S HIS NOT LOYAL TO THIS TEAM OR HIS WIFE.  WE DIDN"T NEED HIM IN NEW YORK DURING THE LATE 90'S AND WE DON'T NEED HIM NOW.  THE YANKEES WILL BE BETTER OF WITHOUT HIM.  HE SHOULD GO PLAY IN JAPAN
I honestly hope his name comes up in the steroids probe and no one is willing to sign him for anywhere near what he was getting paid by the yankees/texas. A-rod is the new barry bonds of baseball, so the giants sound like a perfect fit for him; and the fans there are bound to root for him, since after watching the way the worshiped Mr. steroids (barry bonds), i know they no nothing of baseball other then homeruns.

Its just plain insulting to the whole sport of baseball to try to usurp the world series victory of the red sox, by making a contract announcement like that. I think that goes to show how much of a cancer this guy would be on any team. That right there is another good reason s.f. would be a good fit, they have had a malignant tumor playing there for years getting special treatment. So A-rod take a page from barrys book and go sign with s.f.
Just don't let us catch you bulking up with designer drugs like barry did, or you will suffer a worse fate then he possible could. Marc ecko might pay your agent a few million to brand you before you go to the hall of fame.
A team has to be pretty desperate to pay A-Rod more money than he was making under his old contract. By opting out, he's doing the Texas Rangers a big favor and frees up (20 million a year) cash so they can sign a few free agents or trade for better pitching.

I suspect A-Rod wants to go back to playing SS. Even if he takes a cut in pay for Manny money, it still might be too steep for many teams. NY or Boston are the only realistic cities I see him going to. They have enough additional outside income to meet the salary demand. SF has a chance if A-Rod plays for Barry Bonds money (18-22 million a year).

Think the bigger questions is if A-Rod brings people to the ballpark (sell-outs) and creates national interest in the team and if reaching and winning the World Series is A-Rod's ultimate goal. Right now it seems he's more interested in making the most cash and setting personal records. Good business sense, but that doesn't endear him to passionate and hardcore fans. Teams want financial flexibility to get players they may want to make a stretch run or get them to the playoffs/WS.
A ROD had great season. Any team would like to have him for regular season, then in play offs maybe they could trade him to some little league team, let him play in williamsport world series. may be hit there.
Alex is going to the Angels for $300,000,000.
Remember, you heard it here first.
This is to Dan in Philly...  Best infield ever? Try again,  The Mets of '99 would still have that honor,  as i'm sorry, But Howard is NOT a good First Baseman,   average at best,   I'll give you Rollins and Utley as being outstanding at their positions,

As for A-Rod,  Unless he can play 2nd base,  I don't want him for the Mets,  We've got Reyes and Wright,  guys you can build around for the next 15 years.   A-Rod doesn't fit into any clubhouse,  he tries to be bigger than the game.
The reality is that A-Rod has a talent and can make an average team a contender, a take a contender into the playoffs.

His mistake is the day he chose to look for a new job for more money. He did not drive drunk into a telephone pole.
As a Yankee fan, I couldn't be happier.  Don't let the door hit you on the way out Rodriguez!  A phony in a town of glitz and glamour where everyone usually overlooks those traits as long as you can get the job done. Hopefully the Yankees will take that 30Mil and spend it on a couple of guys that will help get them to the promised land - M. Cabrera (sp) and J. Santana. Only wish Torre didn't take the fall....
You said no other team besides the Giants are paying for their own ballpark...but aren't the Mets paying for their ballpark?
the cubs spent $400 million last year to become a contender so don't be so sure that the Yankees are the only ones willing to pay what he wants. so don't be surprised if the cubs are in the hunt
a rod will go where he can be the main man. cubs are the best bet or ego wise giants would give him a chance to shine.
i think that the angels should get a-rod. even though it would put a dent in the angels payroll, arte moreno doesnt have to worry about money. the angels sell out 40+ games per year. money is not a big issue for the angels. the angels need to stop getting players who had breakout season the year before (steve finley, shea hillenbrand) and go for a player like alex rodriguez who is a proven player, and who they know will have a great year.
Put him back on the Mariners!
A-Rod to the Mets?  Hell no! The Mets need help in the starting rotation and the bullpen.  For A-Rod's money, the Mets could obtain two top-flight starters or bullpen specialists.
Where will A(its all about the money) Rod be?  On his butt in the DR I hope, and I hope certainly NOT w/ the NYY's.
I am glad arod is gone.  yes, right know he is the best player in baseball but he will never ever become the poster boy for MLB.  he has no idea how to conduct himself like a professional.  He is clearly only looking out for himself and all he cares about is breaking records.  I would never put him into the hall of fame.  He has no CLASS.
As much as I admire A-Rod's talent, he has become the quintessential baseball player of the new millenium.  He puts up big numbers and deserves a big salary but, unlike most previous hall-of-fame caliber players, he is not a team player.  He has proved this over and over again in his career.  When he was about to become a free agent in Seattle, rather than agree to a trade during the last year of his contract, he made a statement that he would not sign a contract with any team Seattle traded him to; basically, he slapped the Mariners team in the face by not allowing them to get someone of value for all the years and money they invested in him.  By the way, the year after he was gone, Seattle tied the record for wins in a season by a TEAM.  When he went to the Rangers, he was supposed to be their savior.  He put up good numbers but the most they ever won was 73 games and that was in his first year with the team.  The Yankees should have won more than they did with A-Rod in the lineup.  He helped get them to the playoffs this year with his contributions but, as much as I hate to say it, New York fans chew up and spit out marquee players who don't perform at crunch time because they are knowledgeable about the game and won't tolerate players who are more about themselves than the team.  It's why they loved Bernie Williams and the reason Derek Jeter is the Yankee icon.  Being a lifelong Cardinal fan, I would love to see A-Rod in St. Louis if it were possible for him to change his attitude and see that now that he has more money than he will ever need, maybe he could work to earn the respect he deserves because of his talent.  However, if he is gonna continue to be the A-Rod of the past, I think his best choice is to go the the Cubs and Lou Piniella and they can send Aramis Ramirez to the Cardinals.  At least, Aramis shows passion for the game he plays so well.  The only passion I've seen in A-Rod is when he is misspeaking to the media.
I LOVE ALEX RODRIGUEZ.
I THINK HE SHOULD GO WITH THE CUBS BECAUSE THEY NEED A GOOD LOOKING PLAYER IN THAT TEAM SO FAR THE NEW YORK YANKEES HAD TWO OF THEM ALEX AND DEREK JETER.
AND ALSO BECAUSE CHICAGO IS THE BEST CITY EVER.
I believe A-Rod opting out is a blessing for the Yankees.  When we won those 4 WS with Joe Torre the key was it was a team. Every since we started adding all stars at every position we been losing in the first round of the play off. A-Rod did nothing to help the team win in playoff time.  And the things he did this year was for his stats not for team winning.
Okay, I'll say it...I think A-Rod is a great ball player and hope that he ends up with the Mets.  I think that if money was his only concern, he would have stayed with the Yanks...NO ONE is going to pay him that kind of money, and I hope he realizes that.
At $30 mil per there are very few teams that can afford him AND field a playoff caliber team. The Yanks won't touch him now, the Mets have Wright, the Cubs have Ramirez, the Red Sox should keep Lowell. It will take a clueless owner (see Tom Hicks) with tons of cash. Baltimore certainly ought to be mentioned here. The Giants are equally obvious. The Tigers are possible, as are the Dodgers. It'll be one of the Cali teams or some team looking to make a splash like the Cubs did last off season
A-Rod is the most talented athlete in sports.  The NY Yankees are upset because they couldn't buy him.  George and his son should work on their tactics treating everyone equal.  What he did to Joe and Don is unforgiving.  Good Luck Joe Torre, Don Mattingly & A-Rod............
If A-Rod and the yankees come to terms afterall, that would make them the biggest lying whores ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think A-Rod should say it is not about the money than make a liar out of himself and go for the money. I bet that would work out great. Isn't that right Johnny Damon? They can play together in the "I can't belive I screwed my career up" league.
I disagree with Ted - it isn't a stain on A-Rod's legacy, it IS A-Rod's legacy.  He'll get his money somewhere else, and he is entitled to, his choice.  But not without a price to pay - he elected to leave the one team that could both pay him and surround him with enough talent to win.  He sold his soul to Boras...
I wish I would have been there in the 40s and 50s to go to a baseball game where players played for sport and not for millions of dollars.  There are over two hundred thousand baseball players in this country who have played since childhood who are very very good at this sport and would play for literally nothing if given the opportunity, except they never had the opportunity to play in front of scouts, or big colleges.  Same goes for football, basketball and other major sports.  The records make the heroes. Not the money.
Go to the giants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They need him.  I know its not int heir plans to regrop and build a team centered n youth, but with geting rid of Bonds, Morris and Benitez, they could easily pay for him.
I like the title of this thread, "Where will A-Rod Land?"  Luckily for him, Yankee fans like myself will not decide this because I would vote for a very deep circle of Hell.
There is only one thing this guy has ever done to improve any team he ever played for, and thank God he has finally done it for the Yanks - he's left.  I say a few years too late and who cares if the screen door smacks him on the way out.
I'd love to see the Yanks sign Mike Lowell, but if not, they've won with guys like Charlie Hays and Scott Brosius at third so put that money into the pitching staff (please no more Pavanos or Fat Toads)
I wish that no one would give him an offer.  ALthough I know that will never happen, I hope that at lesat his high offer is under 20 mil...
A-rod is one heck of a player. End of story. If he's egotistical, politically correct, self-centered I could give a !%#t. Our politicians are worst yet we elect them every year for a job they're suppose to do for us. A-rod is a baseball player and I would pay to see him perform on the field. I thought New Yorkers were above this pettiness. Here in LA A-rod would be left to his own devices. Who cares if he's like a kid at a candy store when it comes to strip clubs. My friends and me are the same way. He can be however he wants off the field. When he's on the field he better perform.
The Yankees should have kept Joe Torre. A-Rod was the problem. If you look at each of the teams he was with, there was ni post season heroics. Yes, A-Rod had great stats, but that was just during the regular season. When it counts, he was a failure. The Yankees were not a team with him. They were 9 players. Now that he is gone hopefully, Joe Girardi will be able to form those 9 players into a team.
However, the whole thing is not A-Rod's fault. The New York media hailed him as being better than Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle and other Yankee greats all wrapped up into one. The GREATER FAULT was A-Rod letting you folks say this.
I hope A-Rod gets his just desserts.....NOTHING. He may be a good ball player but he's poison in the Club House....a cry-baby prima dona, all-for-himself jerk who would destroy the comeraderie of any club house. Let him go buy his own team and be the shining star there...just keep him out of Boston!!!!!!!!!
Just when I was starting to get back to "my" side of the infield, I again have to deal with NO-ROD coming taking my place.  Please don't come to LA!
I think A-rod would be well served to take the Toledo Mud Hens offer. A year of baseball community service would do a lot to restore his image and marketability. Right now, the two biggest spenders in baseball wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole.
AR's first call today should be to Randy Moss.

Moss' reputation as a selfish stat-padder and clubhouse pariah was well-established upon his arrival to NE, and many here questioned his ability to fit with a team known for avoiding these plagues.  The local blogs were full of doubt for the heretofore unquestionable wisdom of the Kraft-Pioli-Belichick triumvirate.

There was no shortage of detractors from his previous stops, either.  No writer, fan or former coach from Oakland or MN missed the opportunity to predict that Moss would surely be the Patriots undoing.  "The poor Patriots," they'd say, "they'll be sorry they gave up that 4th-round draft pick for him."

Hmmm.  I can't help but wonder what those folks would say today.

I know - it's still early.  He hasn't reached Tedy Bruschi status yet, and if the Pats take an implausible tumble, there is a chance that Moss the Malcontent may be revived.  That said, he's changed a lot of opinions here (in a place not necessarily known for its flexibility), and sales of jerseys bearing 81 are inching closer to those of 12 and 54.

How did he do it?  It's simple: he adopted a little humility and he put money aside (temporarily) in favor of becoming a winner.  In just a few short months, he's embraced here as a guy that 'gets it' - a man that shares the goals of Average Joe.  In the immortal words of his former boss Al Davis, "just win, baby."

So give Randy a call, Alex, and he'll point you in the right direction.

(Memo to RM: tell AR Boston sucks and make sure the direction you point to is west. Thanks.)

I am happy to see A-Rod opt out of the Yankee deal. Evetyone who knows baseball knows pitching wins championships not 3rd baseman. The team A-Rod ends up with will never win a W.S. and A-Rod will go down in history as one of the best players never to win a W.S. title. It would be nice to see the Yankees get into the leauge championship or W.S. next year without A Rod.
If the Red Sox won the bidding for A-Rod it would be a total reverse of the Bambino Curse becuase now the best player in baseball moves from NY to Boston.  If I were a Yankees fan I would be very afraid - 86 years without a world series!
I am a die hard Yankee fan,and had a good feeling that D-ROD would opt out.Good riddance to him.The Yankees will do better without him. With the cash that they save from not re-signing him they should upgrade pitching and make some quality trades.
I wouldn't mind seeing him go to the Met's. If he's willing to do a position change even better. Although to be honest, I would like to see the Met's pick up some starting pitching. Another great hitter wouldn't be bad, having A-Rod follow up Wright... I think it'd be deadly combo. Nothing like Manny and Ortiz of the Red Sox, but pretty close
If only the Phillies would sign him. It would be the best infield in the history of the game. 4 MVP candidates.

I think the person who is the ultimate villian in the A-Rod mess is Joe Hicks. He overpaid him to start with in hopes that he would bring a championship to the Rangers. A-Rod proceeded to hit meaningless home runs and drive in meaningless runs in Texas as the team fell apart around him. Then he went to New York where he did the same thing, except in October, when it mattered. Now he wants out, Scott Boras had convinced him that someone will pay him thirty million a year to hit meaningless home runs and drive in meaningless runs...in April. Sad to say, I think someone will.
I hope the Yankees really stick to thier guns and move on without A-Rod. As great a player as he is, I beleive the team will do fine without him. I would love to see them focus more on the bullpen. Resigning Posada and Mariano should be the teams top priorities, followed by doing something to strengthen the mediocre (at best) bullpen if Joba heads to the rotation in 2008. Let A-Rod sign a record deal with a West Coast team and languish in meaningless August and September baseball. I really beleive that if A-Rod miraculously returns to the Yanks, they won't win a World Series until he departs.
does anyone remember that the rangers were still paying about 80 % of the salary for A-rod?  The Yankees only had an investment of around 5 mill.
That won't change their payout that much. I hope he does come to the Cubs but I think he will be going to CA somewhere.  What a waste. He fits a smaller field so much better.
